To place the applique pieces on the background fabric:
Using the quarter wreath pattern on page 39, make a plastic template piece marking where the circle and heart intersect the plastic. The template can be made a bit longer on either end, make sure to mark were the actual beginning and ending is.
- Chalk the 12 1/2" block onto the background.
- Fold the background in half length-wise and finger press; unfold.
- Fold the background in half width-wise and finger press; unfold.
- Measure from the block center of the block down each of the four folds 4 1/8" and chalk a small mark. This will be the position of the 'V' of the heart applique.
- Position a heart at each mark; face them in the same direction!
- Line the plastic template up on a quarter of the block so that the template matches into the position of the heart block; the ends should hit the folds.
- Place the circle applique.
- Place the three leaves on either side of the vine between the heart and circle.
- Fuse.
Jean-Marie recommends stitching around the hearts, circles and vines first, leaving the leaves for last. Sew the twelve inside leaves first, then the outside. This forces any excess fabric to the outside of the block.
