	Februrary Log Cabin 8" (pg 16) We left the width of the outside logs a little wider than 1 1/2" so that we can square it down later.
	March Patchwork Hearts (pg 18) Make two of these.  We offered a paper-piecing method in addition to the traditional piecing discussed in the book.	(click image to enlarge)

	April Pinwheels (bottom of pg 15) Make two blocks. We used 2" Thangles.	(click image to enlarge)
	April Bars (bottom of pg 16) Cut the strips the width specified by whatever length your fabric is; we will square down the block to the needed 4 1/2" later on.
	April Candy Corn Applique (pg 6; patterns pg 39 & 45) Use fusible web for the all the pieces.
	May Four-Patch 4" (pg 15) This block has two 4" stars in it.  Ladies making the FULL quilt will need two blocks or a total of four stars . We used 1" Thangles.	(click image to enlarge)
	Fusible Interfacing Applique Fusible interfacing is used to turn shapes so that there are no raw edges.  The shapes must be big enough  and without to many angles.  The shape is drawn on the smooth side of the interfacing in exactly the same format as the design, ie, it does not need to be reveresed.  We suggest using a blue water soluable marking pencil because it is easy to draw with and it reminds you do to the 'bath' step.  Place the glue or bumpy side of the interface to the right-side of the fabric.  Sew on the line using a small stitch length (1.5).  Clip the seam allowance to 1/8".  If there is no open end, make a slit in the center of the interface and use this to turn the shape.  Give the pieces a 'bath' - fully immerse them in a sink of water.  Pull them out after a few minutes, finger shape and let them air dry.  DO NOT PRESS until you are ready to appy them to the applique.  Follow the stitching instructions discussed in the 'Fusible Web Interfacing'.
	May Pumpkin Applique (pg 6 pattern pg 46) Use fusible interfacing for most of  this block - pumpkin pieces, leaves, and stars.  Fusible is appropriate for the vine, stem and inner leaf pieces.
	June Four-Patch Star 8" (pg 17) We used 2" Thangles for the star points.
	June Bat Applique (pg 6 patterns on pg 45) Use fusible interfacing for the bat body, eyes,  and stars.  Fusible web is used for the moon pieces, teeth and small eye pieces.
	Fusible Web Applique Draw on the paper side of the product - the other side is the glue sheet. Remember to reverse the shape you draw from the final design. Many patterns show the individual piece already reversed - like the patterns for our SS quilts. The edges on this type of applique will be raw and left partially exposed unless a satin stitch is used. We are using the traditional 'button-hole' applique stitch to finish ours. Your Janome 720, 760, 4800, 4900, 6500 and 6600 machines all have the stitch. Jean-Marie uses an open-toe applique foot (Janome F2, Bernina 20) when stitching.
	Fudge Factor You'll notice on several of our samples, discussions in class and here on the web page we suggest that a little extra be added to the width or length of the block piece. We do this when the block allows for squaring up at a later time. As we make the blocks, store them, and handle them the edges might begin to fray. If a little 'fudge factor' has been allowed the block can easily be cut to size ready to sewn into its next-door neighbor blocks.
	July Tiny Stars (pg 4) Use 1" Thangles. This Block is used in the 9-BLOCK layout only.
	July Houses (pg 8 patterns on pg 41) Use the directions as shown on page 8. Use accurate scant 1/4" seam allowances so that all the pieces fit. The roof unit is paper-pieced. We appliqued the chimney down as instructed, however, we split the roof seam and inserted the edge of the chimney down into the roof to maintain a more accurate prospective. Use 2" Thangles for the side unit.
	August Bear Paw (pg 20) Ladies making the FULL quilt will need two blocks. We used 1 1/2" Thangles to make the claws. Speaking of claws, watch how you piece these in! its very easy to position one askew!
	August Happy Haunting Applique (pg 6 pattern on pg 47) Use fusible web for the letters. Fusible interfacing can be used for the star - applique down after the neighboring blocks are sewn together.
	August Wreath Applique (pg 2 pattern on pg 39) Use fusible interfacing for vine, leaves and circles. We used fusible interfacing for the hearts on some of our samples. To make the vine we traced the pattern onto template plastic and marked where the circle and heart intersect it, fuse web to the vine fabric and then used the template to mark the four vines. Cut four. Click here for instructions on placing the applique pieces.
	September Broken Dishes (pg 19) We used 2 1/2" Thangles. Watch your color combinations to ensure you have the correct ones.
